There aren't that many female Maranao smokers.
Apparently, there are only two kinds:
1. Those women who are considered "worldly", exposed to outside culture. Probably students, or career women, or the ones who "don't care" what other (Maranaos) say about them. There are many words I've heard used to describe these women, including "(over) educated" and "jaded".
2. Older women. They are usually chain smokers, too. One cigarette right after the other. They are candid, with lots of stories of the old, glorious days. I love talking to them. They seem more open-minded.
Smoking is taboo in Maranao culture not so much because of health reasons, but because of what society might say about these women. An unmarried smoker might be considered a little too wild, with some degree of "experience". Not good.
But it's also not such a big problem in our society. Most women who smoke quit once they are married, or when they have kids.
Is it something worthy of address?
Are YOU a smoker?

I'm not a smoker... I just like cigarette... Hehehehe...
I couldn't agree more with this one. As soon as I was married, I was forced to agree not to smoke. :( Afraid to be regarded as the "liberated one" by my in-laws, I was forced to quit instantaneously. The younger ones thought It was cool that I smoke, but then being the "good wife", the follower to my hubby's wishes, I eventually quit my habit. In the long run, it was for my benefit after all.
I second the motion!!haha In fact I second everything said..Oh well what gives? The "mocha java" as it is most often termed by my peers and I is an inevitable necessity that can't be rationalized nor defended.
It is my companion, the type that witnesses all the chapters in your life without having to explain anything at all.
If I had to choose between my MJ with ten more so called friends..I'd drop the latter in a heart beat.haha
Need I say more??!!
Anonymous 1:
Erm.. Good for you, I guess?
Anonymous 2:
It did seem to work out for the best. Why did you use to smoke though?
Jehanifah Merdekah:
Here's a question. Would you quit your MJs for the right man? :P
Well you see the right man would never ask me to give up my life, now would he? *wink wink wink*
Well you see the right man would never ask me to give up my life, now would he? *wink wink wink*
Jehanifah:
THAT'S WHAT I ALWAYS SAY!! :D Haha!!
Anonymous 2: I used to smoke cigs when I was a lot younger, then it eventually became a habit. (Singing to the tune of laklak) "Nagsimula sa patikim, tikim. pinilit kong gustuhin, bisyo'y nagsimulang lumalim, kaya ngayong ang hirap tanggali-hin"... hehheheheh
Anonymous 1: So what exactly do you do with a cigarette?
Anonymous 2: We, the Maranao peeps, should really start encouraging the use of the word "liberated" in the good way its meant to be. I once wrote about how wrong Maranaos refer to a bitchy or slutty woman or anything that is of the same level as "liberated".
the maranao: finally you have THE balls indeed...so far i like where this site's going.
jehanifah merdekah: i'm out of MJs...bum me a stick:D
DeVille:
I presume Anonymous 1 likes to carry one around, and maybe, by some chance event, a lighter happens to accidentally touch the tip, and it lights and he accidentally inhales it and then exhales the smoke.
You must now define "Liberated".
Yalla. Guest blog.
Wait wait..I'm confused who's blog is this again??hahah
DeVille I'm always loaded man..drop by when you have time. Gots them green labels too.*devillish smile**
Ya Mranaw I agree mos def..and then he accidentally gets Lung Cancer, No?
Liberated?? It's just a word that makes people feel good about themselves.feeling they have an edge or something coz they get to do and be what they like..
So they say.
But its all in their heads. Which head tho I don't know.=D
GuestBlog Rules.haha
re: the question at the end of the entry.
i used to be... oh, but i'm neither married nor have children. :)
I'm not a smoker, but I agree that the word "liberated" is given an evil tinge here by many Maranaos. But one thing: Many Maranaos sometimes condemn something, and yet before you know it, they're doing it too! Hehehe
@MJ
This is your blog, dahling. ;)
Everyone who reads it and comments makes it happen.
@BabyPink
Aydaw, pasisigupan ka bs a andang. Bad anan, bad anan. Haha.
@coralbead
I would propose a re-definition of the word "Liberated", but I realize now that it really wouldn't help anything, would it.
Most of us know that Liberated is not the same as Slutty, even though those two are synonymous in Maranao culture.
IMO, Liberated means being free from anything that would stop someone from becoming a better person, whether it is petty talk, idleness, arrogance, or any number of obstacles.
Slutty, on the other hand, well, that's easy. (Oi, I punned! Haha.)
